THE VANWYKSDORP PRIMARY SCHOOL CLEAN UP DAY 2014

On the 9th of December 2014, we arranged with the Vanwyksdorp Primary School to embark on a town clean-up. This was a new idea to both raise awareness of pollution and instill values of care for Vanwyksdorp's receiving environment. This was also a prelude to the much anticipated Vanwyksdorp Children's Christmas Party!

Excitement was in the air as we arrived at Vanwyksdorp Primary School on the morning of the 9th to participate in the town clean up. Although we arrived early, the learners were already waiting to start the day of mop up operations in their town. Once split into groups, we set off with the plastic rubbish bags. Within an hour 50 bags of litter was collected as we walked back to the school in the searing heat. It was with great delight when we bought the kiddies each an ice cream lolly to quinch their thirst. Although 50 bags was quite a hefty number, it hardly made a dent to areas of the town which are completely saturated with litter.

The primary cause of this litter is wind-blown from the adjoining dump site, where only garden refuge is allowed to be dumped. It is envisaged to approach the municipality to clear up the mess and increase thier efforts to transport the litter to the official dumpsite in Ladismith.
